Tips to save money

In collaboration with Les as de l’info

Want to save some money, but don't know where to start? The thrifty readers of Les As de l’info shared their tips and tricks. They just might inspire you!

Books, ice cream, a new swimsuit … There are so many reasons to spend money during the summer! But, be careful: if you always spend on little things, you might end up with no money left.

Some of these readers managed to save up for big purchases, like a game console, a telescope and a skateboard. How'd they do it? That's what we asked them! Here are their tips.

1. Deposit your money into an account

This is a popular one!

An account is a place where you can leave money you want to use later. A lot of different financial institutions have accounts for kids. You (depending on your age) or your parents can withdraw some money at the teller or at an ATM.

Léla R says that you have to be motivated to save your money: "I have an account that I put money into. Whenever I get money, like from babysitting, I always put half of it into my account."

Chocolat1 knows exactly what they want: "I have a School Caisse account so I can save up for a telescope or a book I really want."

Lolo always puts some money into their account, but they also keep some to spend: "I put half of my money into my account to save and I keep the rest in my wallet. I only spend the money in my wallet when I have at least $30."

2. Wait before you buy

Sometimes, we feel we want to buy something RIGHT NOW. The temptation is strong! It can be hard, especially when we see a lot of people on the internet showing off the cool things they've bought. Here's the trick: wait a few days, and see if you still want it.

That's exactly what Cosmique queen does: "When I want something, I wait and see if I still want it in a few weeks. If I do, I start saving up for it."

Same for Farfouche! "If you want to save, it's a good idea to wait a few days or even a few weeks before you buy something."

3. Be careful with small purchases!

We all know it's important to have fun. It's ok to buy some candy every now and then! But be careful: if it's always a few bucks here and a few bucks there, and you might not have much left!

Pasta-Livre wants things that last: "I think it's better to buy books or other things that can make you happy for a long time."

And Spooder says: "Don't let your friends influence how you spend your money!"

4. Make a budget

salut222 says: "I have a budget to avoid spending too much".

A budget is a set amount of money you plan to spend on something. For example, if you have $200 in your account, you can say that you won't spend more that $100 this summer. That means $100 is your budget for the summer.

Chloclolalicorne says: "I choose something I really want and I save up all the money I earn to buy it."
